Lyrics from "Eye on the Sparrow"

His Eye is on the Sparrow
poem by Civilla D. Martin, melody by Charles H. Gabriel, arranged by Saul Schechtman 2004

One of the greatly loved, simple Christian songs, harking back to the text in the Gospel of Matthew (and Luke), “Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?” This arrangement contains a bird motif in the accompaniment.

Text: based on Matt. 10:29,31 and Luke 12: 6,7

Why should I feel discouraged
When shadows seem to come?
Why should my heart be lonely
And long for heaven and home? –
When God’s love is my portion,
A constant friend is He,
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me,
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me.

(Refrain)

I sing because I’m happy,
I sing because I’m free,
For His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me.

“Let not your heart be troubled,
”His tender word I hear.
And resting on His goodness,
I lose my doubts and fear.
Though by the path He leadeth
But one step I may see,
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me,
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me.

(Refrain)
