Song
of Ruth
by
Saul Schechtman 1999
This is a melodic
and dramatic modern rendition of Ruth’s statement of
fidelity to her mother-in-law, Naomi, when – both of
them widowed – Naomi urges her to return to her parents.
Ruth refuses to leave her, declaring her intention to accompany
Naomi back to Naomi’s country and remain with her, although
it will make Ruth a permanent outsider in a foreign land. This
piece also makes a wonderful wedding song for the musically
adventurous.
Text: based on Ruth
1: 16, 17 (there are at least two versions of the text, the one
given here is the one used on this CD.)
Intreat me not to leave
you, or to return from following you: for where you go, I will
go; and where you lodge I will lodge:
your people shall be my people, and your God my God.
Your distress
is my own; and never will I forsake you. Your distress is my
own, and then, too, I’m by your side.
May the Lord bless
you henceforth, and more also.
Nothing at all parts
me from you.
